poem: Why Don't You Run?

Why Don't You Run?

Why don't you run
like you did when
you were a child
when did you stop
skipping on sidewalks
was it when your feet
couldn't get you away
fast enough
when your legs couldn't
save you
when there was nothing
you could do anymore
but fall to the ground
and be beaten
i walk now
but i feel closer
to stepping out
and someday, to the surprise
of those who watch me,
I will skip down Main St
appearing the fool
but only because
it took so long
for me to stand up.
