poem: when you dream

when you dream

where are some of the places
that you return to when you dream?
me? i've gone back to
throwing myself into a gully
jumping right in over trees
then falling into bushes with
sticks and limbs scratching my flesh
I've done that before
in my dreams
hurled myself over the edge
rolling through dead leaves
then getting to my feet at a run
heading for the highway
beyond the green meadow

I never make it though.
