poem: fading away

fading away

I got the call the night before
and was told that she had died
natural causes at an unnatural time
while her family took it hard
I was in shock - so unexpected
for one in perfect health
the next day everyone carried on
the best they could until
there she was walking around
as though she'd never passed on
I could see her daughter, outside the doors
on her knees, beneath a tree in mourning
unaware of her mother pretending to be alive
"how can this be?" I heard someone say
my reply was whispered for I didn't want
the dead to hear, "she won't admit she has
no place in this world - she won't believe
she is dead" and all that could be done was
to wait for her to realize and no one wants
to be around for that so I waited
just outside the women's washrooms
knowing the time would come when she
would wash her hands then look up
at the mirror, at herself
to see the world fading, fading away.
