poem: space travel

space travel

I was given a map
at the age of eleven
which I taped to
my bedroom wall
To me, at the time,
the solar system
was known to consist
of nine planets in all
They were drawn with
the distance between
the miles quoted from
the earth to each one
and in my mind
I would travel lines of stars
and the space from here
to the sun

with no knowledge of just how
impossible that would be
before I had even begun.
