poem: Absent Moon

Absent Moon

where is the moon?

scuffling safety work shoes
my neck tilted as I step
staring at stars in a sky
so blue it seems black
my stick of chewing gum
makes slapping sounds
there are no other
disturbances on bare
sidewalks or beneath
the trees on this path
i could find my way
home with eyes closed
although i walk with my
keys in hand i fumble
at the door in the dark
this makes me think of
all that is absent
all too soon

there is no moon.
