"half of me is ocean ... half of me is sky"

Tom Petty woke me up this morning.

The last part of my dream finally ended the night of nightmares. I was on a slow moving train, open cars, cbc radio broadcasting some sort of benefit concert. Passed by the park where the concert was happening and cut a whole through the mesh screen, free fallin' into a mosh pit of people jumping up and down to music. The music was raw. Alive. When the people were gone, Tom Petty was there and I asked him to play some music. The one line was "more than I can bear" which is actually from a song called 'Car Crash' by Our Lady Peace but the song sounded like Tom Petty and it included a tip-off word - 'Circus' - which reminded me of the one album I have of his - "She's The One" Soundtrack. I put on the first song 'Walls (Circus)' track 1 and I'm playing it on repeat. Seems to be just what I needed to hear.

Walls (Circus)
From the album "She's The One"

Some days are diamonds
Some days are rocks
Some doors are open
Some roads are blocked

Sundowns are golden
Then fade away
And if I never do nothing
I'll get you back some day (sounds like: 'I'll get your back some day' to me)

Cause you got a heart so big
It could crush this town
And I can't hold out forever
Even walls fall down

And all around your island
There's a barricade
It keeps out the danger
It holds in the pain

Sometimes you're happy
Sometimes you cry
Half of me is ocean
Half of me is sky

But you got a heart so big
It could crush this town
And I can't hold out forever
Even walls fall down

And some things are over
Some things go on
And part of me you carry
Part of me is gone

But you got a heart so big
It could crush this town
And I can't hold out forever
Even walls fall down

Baby you got a heart so big
It could crush this town
And I can't hold out forever
Even walls fall down
They fall down

- Tom Petty

I sang with him from where I stood watching because he encouraged me. Afterward, as they were packing up their equipment, I went over to him and shook his hand, telling him that I admire his songwriting - his lyrics are amazing. I told him that when I hop that slow moving train for home, I'll write a poem about riding the rails and singing with Tom Petty. As I walked away he asked me if I was busy Friday and I said, I'm free, all day.

I haven't listened to this cd in a long time. I started to sing with it and realized my voice was almost gone - as though I had been singing in my sleep...
